Lack of Extracurricular Activities

I. Description of Problem or Issue

Our issue at hand is the lack of extracurricular activities in schools and how it affects students personally, in the class room, and socially. Extracurricular activities are also known as "after school programs." They are usually activities that are outside the classroom and are for recreation. Sports, clubs, and organizations can all fall under the category of extracurricular activities. EC activities can provide a different light for students who don't shine in the class room to shine somewhere else. They can also help kids keep out of trouble for instance going out and causing trouble with the wrong group of people. Without these activities for these students it can affect them in all different types of ways, Such as socially, mentally, academically, physically, and emotionally.

II. Research Summary

With my research I am looking for resources that have studies on extracurricular activities and the affect it has on the environment for students and others. I believe that extracurricular activities keep a lot of children out of trouble and harm's way by taking up a lot of free time. So, with that i am on a mission to find articles and facts to see if the more that children are occupied would create a safer environment without it affecting their school work in a negative way. Not only would extra curricular activities help make certain areas safer but it would also give students skills that they will later use to help create a successful life with such as leadership and social skills.

My research shows that with a lack of extracurricular has caused a great decrease in academic success. Without extracurricular activities students can find themselves becoming less successful in their academics due to many different reasons. Students become more successful in school with extracurricular activities because they must keep higher grades in order to participate in their activities. Without the force of these activities these students then become less successful in school because they do not have to keep the importance of grades in order to keep what else they find important to participate in.

My research helps others to see how much extracurricular activities help students stay in school. Throughout all of my research I have found only positive articles that find extracurricular activities to be a pro. Students are more likely to stay in school because extracurricular activities provide a place or time for the student to gain leadership skills, become part of a team whether it is sports or a club, and create relationships with piers that end up helping the students' self confidence and academics. It was found that a student with even one hour of an extracurricular activity a week is more likely to stay in school than a student without. These activities provide a place for students to grow and share ideas with their piers, while still having fun. Without these activities many students would not still be in school because some students depend on these activities rather than the academics of school to provide for them.

My research touches upon the lack of parent and teacher involvement effecting extracurricular activities. EC activities aren't just a way to keep students "off the streets" but it helps these students with life skills. Through EC activities students can develop better social skills, show maturity, and become more independent. I believe that if students don't get encouragement from teachers and parents I don't think they will take it upon them selves to have the motive to join or take part in an EC activity and if they do take part in it, continue it. With encouragement from parents and teachers these students will take part in an EC activity and it will help them become more focused and better prepared in the classroom which will lead to academic success.

II. Group Product Overview

For our project we will begin with an introduction that will give insight to the class about what we are going to talk about. We will introduce each topic with an example of each question. We have come up with examples of each person that would be put in the situations that our questions are based off of. After that we will give answers to each of our questions with the interesting facts from each of our separate questions. Then we will show a portion of a video from "Take the Lead" and discuss how that relates to our topic. We will conclude with a conclusion and wrap up of our project answering any questions that the class has left. This presentation should take a total of 20 minutes, and should be very informative to the class and teach everyone new facts that they previously did not know.

V. Group Reaction/Opinion(s) about Issue

Now that you've researched your issue, discuss your results and write two paragraphs expressing your opinions. The first paragraph should explain the majority opinion. The second paragraph should summarize other opinions held by team members about the issue.

I liked researching this topic because more and more school budgets are cutting extracurricular activities. Because my question concerned the drop out rates I found our topic even more interesting. Students dropped out of school more frequently which was to be expected, but still is an interesting concept. I also thought it was interesting that students needed an extra push from teachers and parents to get involved in these activities that actually benefit them in the long run. - andrea_moore andrea_moore

After doing my research I realized that extracurricular activities would not increase the safety of the environment. Although extracurricular activities does have an positive effect, most times the problem lies in the discipline. I did like reading the different article because it is nice to see that people do care about kids and their success and school and not everyone is out for money. - fitted1228 fitted1228

After researching this topic I found out a great amount of information that I never knew about. I feel as if I always took my extracurricular activities for granted and I never knew the lifestyle problems that it caused for kids. Although my personal topic did not totally focus on how it negatively affected children, through out my research I could truly say that the lack of extracurricular activities leaves children not only with out activities to participate in, but at a disadvantage in comparison to other students. - Arly_Bratman Arly_Bratman

VI. Notes for Next Year's Students

There are not many articles concerning the lack of extracurricular activities, rather what would happen if they were taken away. Next year the students should try to find more articles concerning the lack of, and how it is affecting students in recent times. Also, after the class feedback, we needed to have more of an effective style of presentation. Although no one said the presentation was bad, we needed to incorporate the powerpoint during our times to speak. More information should be found on individual stories because they are more interesting and stick with the listener for a much longer time than a hypothetical situation.
